In July, I started working with a new client here in Basingstoke: The Riverdene Pub. The transformation that the owner—and everyone else in town—noticed was legendary. It is easily one of the biggest achievements I have ever delivered for a client.
In the space of 30 days, we took their social media from 1,000 views a month to over 500,000. I had multiple videos surpass the 10k mark, with one reaching 400k views and 8,000 likes in about a week. We also gained 1,000 followers on TikTok and over 600 on Instagram in that first month alone.
The secret? We built the pub’s entire brand around the owner, Darren Head.
Darren is one of the most energetic, ADHD-filled men in his late thirties that I have ever met. In our very first meeting, I sat down and immediately knew this was going to work. He not only had the exact personality to anchor a personal brand, but he effortlessly made everyone around him fall in love with him.
This entire strategy is pulled directly from a concept called the "Inner Circle," which is the core focus of my new book, Circle Theory, coming out next year.
To create his online world, I spent a massive amount of time at the pub. I followed him around, took notes, and just watched how he operated.
Let's look at the most popular video we filmed—the World Cup telly bit—to show exactly how this Inner Circle strategy works.
It was during the 2026 World Cup. The pub was packed with football fans who all knew each other, the vibe was great, and Darren had already installed an 86-inch flatscreen in the pub garden to increase footfall for the footy season.
Then, 25 minutes before kick-off, Darren came up to me while I was halfway through a cigarette. He wanted to unbox, set up, and hang a brand-new telly in the basement before the match started. Keep in mind, taking the old TV off the wall and replacing it was completely unnecessary—the existing one was perfectly fine. We had exactly 20 minutes to pull this off.
I stubbed out my cigarette, grabbed my camera, and followed him to the haunted basement. His friends materialised out of nowhere and we frantically started unboxing. I propped the camera up and started filming my Casio watch counting down the minutes—"12 minutes!" then "10 minutes!"
It became the most viral video filmed at The Riverdene. Here is why it worked, and how it ties into the Circle Theory framework.
1. Always be on standby
I had spent the weeks leading up to the football season training Darren. I ingrained it into him that anytime he had a crazy idea or a task to do, he needed to come find me so I could film it. Because I was on standby, we caught the exact moment of chaos that the internet loves.
2. Bring the audience in
When we were rushing to hang the TV, I made sure to capture the fast, funny dialogue between Darren and his friends. But I also panned the camera to my own face looking scared and confused. Your audience does not want to feel like sheep blindly following you. They follow you because they want to feel a part of something—a part of your world. Especially a local pub!
3. Leverage your unique flair
This is the core of the Inner Circle. The success we saw came directly from Darren’s charisma, his humour, and his go-get-‘em energy. For most people, his level of energy isn't normal, and they get to live it out by watching him. It gives people comedic relief and a positive spin on the mundane, everyday world.
Finding your unique angle and purpose is ultimately one of the only things you can control in a saturated market. For Darren, it was his humour combined with the community environment of a pub.
His personality created massive FOMO. People started showing up to The Riverdene just so they could be in the videos, have some banter with us, and join the community. We saw an immediate spike in bar sales, footfall, event attendance, and clicks on their new website (theriverdenepub.co.uk). All because of the fun little world we created online.
